Call for Stall-Holders...Teddy Bear's Picnic!
The Townsville & District Multiple Birth Association in conjunction with Communities for Children Townsville West is holding a Teddy Bear’s Picnic Family Day at Cambridge Park on Sunday 15th March from 9am-12noon. The event will incorporate the launch of the Townsville West Multiple Birth Family Support Program and the celebration of Multiple Birth Awareness Week.
The day will be focused on families with children aged 0-5 years and will be open to the whole community – not just multiple birth families – although we will be raising awareness of the challenges that face multiple birth families and expect a large number of multiples to attend.
Some of the challenges encountered by our families include:
· Social isolation
· Long term effects of premature birth including disability, long term hospitalisation, illness, developmental delays (over 50% of multiples are born pre-term)
· Poor literacy (by age 14 only 40% of twin boys possess the reading skills necessary to ‘survive’ in Australian society)
· Financial hardship
· Multiple Birth mothers have more than double the incidence of post-natal depression than singleton mothers, and the incidence of post-traumatic stress disorder is also high
· Very high rates of family break-down
We are looking for other community organisations to provide an activity based stall for the morning that would also include information as to services available for young multiple birth families.
The theme of the day will be ‘Teddy Bear’s Picnic’ and will be a great morning with teddy bear give-aways & activities, craft, twin pram obstacle courses and more.
